The picture is one of a girl, full of curiosity, hope and life, who is gently holding onto a sparrow. The inspiration was from a photograph of a Brazilian girl leaning over table smiling at camera while colouring a picture at Projeto Betesda De Boqueirao in Boqueirao de Cesario, southeast of Fortaleza. The sparrows are placed within this painting as they represent the value of life. A beautiful image of our extreme value is that expressed in the Bible in Matthew: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father... you are worth more than many sparrows "(Matt 10:29; 31) In human terms, a sparrow is not worth much, but these verses turn this view on its head by saying if the very Creator is intimately concerned about the life and death of these humble birds, how much more precious are we?. In some ways I see sad similarities between our view of the poor and the sparrow. May our human view be changed to reflect the Divine.
